Since 1999, HealthGrades has independently rated the quality of care at virtually all of the nation's 5,000 hospitals. Based on hospitalization records that hospitals directly submit to state governments and Medicare, HealthGrades utilizes the most recent three years of data – approximately 40 million hospitalization records – to determine its star ratings and awards. Star ratings are based on mortality and complication rates that are risk adjusted, so that hospitals with different levels of patient acuity can be compared on equal footing.

The ratings reflect objective patient outcomes at the nation's hospitals. No hospital can opt in or out of being rated by HealthGrades.

These ratings and awards are relied upon by millions of consumers visiting HealthGrades.com, and by hundreds of hospitals that use them to analyze their own quality and communicate those achievements to their communities, the media, employers and other stakeholders.

WOMEN'S HEALTH EXCELLENCE AWARD™
HealthGrades Women's Health Excellence Award™ Hospitals that receive this award rank among the top 5% of all hospitals nationwide when it comes to providing care to women.

Women's health outcomes are separated into three aspects of care: Women's Medicine (heart attack, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and stroke); Women's Cardiovascular Procedures (coronary bypass surgery, peripheral vascular bypass, coronary interventional procedures, resection/replacement of abdominal aortic aneurysm, carotid surgery, and valve replacement); and Women's Bone & Joint Health (total knee and total hip replacement surgeries, spinal surgeries, and hip fracture repair).

To be included in the analysis, hospitals had to have an open heart program and treat significant numbers of women for stroke. (Hospitals that transferred out more than 10% of their stroke patients were excluded.) As well, hospitals had to have a significant patient population in at least six additional cohorts from all areas (pulmonary, cardiac, vascular, orthopedics and spine).

HealthGrades ratings of women's health are performed annually and released each Spring along with HealthGrades' annual Women's Health in American Hospitals Study.
