Our Consultants

HealthGrades’ clinical consultants know what it takes to fast-track clinical excellence because they’ve been there – in the ER, the ICU, the OR and the board room. These talented individuals come from a diverse range of backgrounds, but share one common passion: helping hospitals achieve clinical excellence.

The following are selected members of the HealthGrades Clinical Excellence Research and Consulting Group:

Samantha Collier, M.D., MBA
Samantha Collier, M.D., MBA
Dr. Collier's role as an Executive Vice President and HealthGrades' Chief Medical Officer has allowed her the opportunity to lead consulting teams that have helped more than 100 hospital organizations throughout the country develop and implement quality improvement initiatives that have improved their quality of care and public profiling positions. Dr. Collier, who continues to practice part time as a hospitalist, is frequently called to speak about quality improvement, the important impact of consumerism and healthcare ratings, public profiling and patient safety to the news media and at major conferences that have included the Harvard Quality Colloquium, CMS National Customer Service conference, the American College of Healthcare Executives and the National Association for Healthcare Quality.

Education/Training:

Dr. Collier has served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa in the Department of Internal Medicine. She holds a BS in Medical Technology from the University of Delaware. She is a graduate of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where she received her MD and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Richard May, M.D.
Richard May, M.D.
Dr. May is a Senior Physician Consultant with HealthGrades who works closely with hospital administration and physician leadership to identify opportunities to improve patient safety, clinical outcomes and physician productivity and satisfaction. While Dr. May consults on a range of clinical quality areas, he specializes in orthopedic surgery quality programs and protocol development, transfusion programs, delirium prevention, advanced anesthesia and pain control protocols, pre-op patient evaluation and education programs and hospitalist co-management programs.

"Generations of healthcare providers have struggled with the nebulous idea of "quality care” without any real way to define or measure it,” says Dr. May. "It is only in the last few years that we have had the data systems available to offer any real hope of understanding clinical quality, and from that understanding, find a way to deliver it consistently to every patient. I want to help guide hospitals through the rough seas of transition, to the calmer, more consistent, world of quality care that lies ahead.”

Education/Training:

Dr. Richard May is an orthopedic surgeon and immediate past president of the Colorado Medical Society. May brings to Health- Grades more than a decade of experience as a practicing physician and community leader. May graduated with honors from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1988, and went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center
Marigene "Mimi" Hartker, M.D., MBA
Marigene "Mimi" Hartker, M.D., MBA
Dr. Marigene Hartker is a Senior Physician Consultant with a background in conflict management and dispute resolution, which makes her a powerful ally for hospitals looking to build strong, sustainable physician relationships – the foundation for a culture of clinical excellence. Dr. Hartker leads clinical excellence teams in a variety of areas, and specializes in conflict within the healthcare environment, cardiology improvement processes, obesity and hospital medicine.

"I believe that giving good quality care is weighing the costbenefit of any medical intervention we do on our patient - whether it be a lab test, diagnostic procedure or surgery,” says Dr. Hartker. "I believe we as physicians do a grave disservice to our patients by not doing a thoughtful analysis on each and every patient.”

Education/Training:

Dr. Hartker specializes in internal medicine and pediatrics. She graduated with honors from Michigan State University Medical School in 1995 and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Chicago, where she also worked for four years as an assistant professor of clinical medicine. In 2005 Hartker completed her Masters in Business Administration at the University of Chicago.
