Mission of Good Samaritan Hospital

The Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) mission and values demonstrate our pursuit of excellence and commitment to our patients and employees.

GSH Mission
We will build healthier communities with others who share our commitment to provide high-quality, cost-competitive health care services.

GSH Vision & History
In 1932, the Sisters of Charity established reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence as the foundation of their mission to build a healthier community. Today, their vision for the hospital continues to inspire the personal interactions and scientific advances that are the spirit and substance of Good Samaritan Hospital.

Throughout its history, Good Samaritan Hospital has been at the forefront of healthcare innovation. Taking advantage of legislation to fund nurses training during World War II,
GSH was able to train and retain some of the top nursing students in the country, allowing the hospital to put an even greater focus on patient care.

Along with hiring top-quality nurses and doctors, Good Samaritan Hospital also set out to change the face of healthcare. Good Samaritan Hospital’s Madonna Pavilion was the second-largest obstetrics program in Ohio when it opened in 1954. The hospital would later open the Family Birthing Center in 1986, which at the time was the only obstetric service in Ohio combining labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum in one birthing suite.

GSH also focused on offering services to patients that were not available at other area hospitals. Doctors at GSH pioneered the first open-heart surgery in 1959, a first for the city of Dayton. The hospital also created Dayton’s first cardiac care unit in 1966.

Today, the hospital continues its proud history of patient care and innovation and has been rated for best orthopedics in the Dayton area by Healthgrades since 2003. In addition, Good Samaritan Hospital is listed as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® for cardiovascular care by Thomson Healthcare.

In order to continue providing the quickest response possible in the diagnosis and treatment of heart problems, Good Samaritan Hospital is building a new $18 million heart and vascular hospital within its existing building. This facility will be 75,000 square feet and provide 84 private rooms dedicated to heart and vascular patients.
