When should you see a cardiologist?

You should seek care from a cardiologist under the following situations:

  • You have a form of heart disease that requires ongoing monitoring and specialized care, such as angina, heart attack, or heart failure.
  • You have serious risk factors for heart disease, such as a strong family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
  • You have unusual changes in your EKG test.
  • You need specialized heart procedures such as cardiac catheterization.

Cardiologists take care of patients with the following symptoms or conditions:

  • Chest pain, which can move into your shoulders, arms, neck or jaw
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations or feeling like your heart is racing
  • Passing out 
  • Shortness of breath

If you have any of the above symptoms, call 911 immediately. Once you are in the emergency room, an emergency room doctor will diagnose your symptoms and have a cardiologist see you if there is a possibility that you are having a heart problem.
