Patient / Medical Philosophy
Dr. Richard Schmidt believes the care of a patient should be guided by the patient.
“A patient has to participate in their care. First of all they have to understand what care they’re getting and why they’re getting it, and often the patient needs to tweak or change that treatment regiment because they can give some insights in how that treatment should be done.”
Although he is a specialist in his field – one of about 75 orthopedic oncologists in the nation – Dr. Schmidt doesn’t ever want to force a patient down a certain treatment path.
“I never walk up to a patient and say 'you have to do this.' My job is to give the patient the options that are available to them, explain the options to them and then ultimately help them make a wise choice as to what to do.”
Part of empowering his patients to make their own decisions is treating them as individuals.
“We tailor our care for the cancer patient and then we address the specific needs that they have.”
But for Dr. Schmidt it’s about more than just treating the patient’s disease.
“Here at CTCA it's a holistic approach. The patient feels very comfortable with their surroundings. They're treated as a whole not just as a diagnosis.”
