Patient / Medical Philosophy

Dr. Matthew E. Cunningham studied Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University, and attended Columbia University for both medical and graduate school. He was a Rhodes Scholar regional finalist while at Hopkins, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated with general and departmental honors. He was an National Institute of Health (NIH) funded Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) student while at Columbia, and graduated with numerous honors including Alpha Omega Alpha, the Alfred E. Steiner Research Award, the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research, the Miriam Merkman Spotnitz Award, and awards for clinical excellence including the Virginia P. Apgar Award, and the New York Orthopaedic Hospital Award. As an undergraduate, he was a varsity wrestler and football player, played club rugby, and was a lifeguard captain at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Long Branch, NJ. Throughout graduate training, he played for the Columbia “P&S” medical school rugby club, continued to work and compete in lifeguard relays with the Borough of Bradley Beach, and completed 2 New York City Marathons during his spare time. His postgraduate clinical training included a surgical internship at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, an orthpaedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and fellowship training in Spine and Scoliosis surgery at HSS. Dr. Cunningham has clinical interest in all types of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine care, both operative and non-operative, including spinal deformity (scoliosis, flatback, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis), acute problems (trauma, herniated disks, pinched nerves/radiculopathy, cauda equina), and degenerative problems (stenosis, degenerative disk disease, revision spinal surgery). He is an author of numerous recent peer reviewed clinical and basic science research papers (see below), review articles, and book chapters, and serves as a reviewer for the journal Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. Dr. Cunningham is a volunteer surgeon for the Foundation for Orthopaedics and Complex Spine, and has visited countries including Ghana, Sierra Leone and Barbados to provide surgical and non-surgical spine care to these underserved peoples.
