Nature of Complaint:
The physician failed to stop the patient's use of oral anticoagulation medication four to five days prior to performing an epidural steroid injection, nerve block and/or facet block. The physician also failed to measure the patient's prothrombin time and international normalized ratio the morning of the procedure. The physician also failed to confirm that the patient had an appropriate level of coagulation prior to performing the procedure. The patient underwent another surgical procedure to remove the epidural hematoma and lipoma the following day and still suffered complete paraplegia. The patient has been readmitted to the hospital several times for complications related to her condition.
Action Taken:
The physician has entered into a Counter Settlement Agreement incorporating the original Settlement Agreement subject to the following terms and conditions:
Nature of Complaint:
The physician has been the subject of disciplinary action in another state.
The physician has been disciplined by the State of Florida.
Action Taken:
The physician shall pay a Civil Penalty in the amount of $3500.00.
