Patient / Medical Philosophy
My surgical practice and clinical research focus entirely on the treatment of breast cancer. My research interests have included patterns of loco-regional spread, long-term outcomes of breast cancer surgery, the impact of screening mammography and, most recently, sentinel lymph node biopsy. This procedure involves removing the first few lymph nodes draining from the breast ('sentinel nodes'), and checking for the presence of cancer. If the sentinel nodes are cancer free, then the remaining nodes don't need to be removed and the side effects of the surgery are minimized.
I am currently the principal investigator of MSKCC's sentinel-node biopsy program, which has the world's largest experience with this exciting new operation. My colleagues and I continue to study and refine the procedure. We have presented and published our work worldwide and have taught the procedure to hundreds of practicing surgeons and trainees. I lecture widely and am the editor of a new multi-author textbook on sentinel-node biopsy.

Medical malpractice is ordinary negligence by a healthcare provider which causes injury. Examples include being improperly diagnosed, treated, medicated or operated upon outside the standard of care.
Standard of care is that level of care, skill and treatment which is recognized as acceptable and appropriate by a reasonably prudent similar healthcare provider under similar circumstances.
If your physician has settled a malpractice claim or has a judgment on a malpractice claim, evaluate the information and make a determination. You may want to use this information to start a discussion with the physician.
