Fellowship Director, Robotic and Urologic Oncology*
Care Philosophy
A specialist in minimally invasive urologic oncology, Dr. Josephson has particular expertise in the surgical management of prostate, kidney, testis, and bladder cancer, as well as urinary tract reconstruction. He is unique in that he is one of very few urologic surgeons in the country who have extensive training and experience in both open and robotic techniques for the management of complex urologic disorders. His philosophy towards attaining cancer control heavily relies on a multidisciplinary team approach. His primary clinical and research interests include the use of innovative and advanced laparoscopic/robotic techniques for urologic cancer surgery. He has particular experience performing Robotic Prostatectomy with the da Vinci-S system, as well as Robotic Cystectomies, and Laparoscopic Radical and Partial Nephrectomies. In select individuals, he also performs cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation for the management of small renal tumors. In addition, he has studied the role of extended lymph node dissections in patients with invasive bladder cancer as well as the utility of molecular markers to guide further therapy. With colleagues, he is examining the role of robotic surgery in the management of high-risk localized prostate-cancer and those following failure of radiation or cryotherapy using intra-operative optical imaging technologies.
Dr. Josephson is a native of Southern California, having received a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology at University of California, Los Angeles, where he was named both a Departmental Scholar and Alumni Association Distinguished Scholar. He then attended medical school in New York at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and returned to California to receive general surgery and urology training at the University of Southern California. He then completed a clinical urologic oncology and reconstructive urology fellowship at Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center where he was also a Clinical Instructor of Urology. He subsequently did a fellowship in minimally invasive and robotic urologic oncology at City of Hope. His studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Urology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Urology, and Expert Review of Anticancer Therapy. Dr. Josephson is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology, American Urologic Association, and American College of Surgeons.*

What is Urology?
Urology is the study of disorders of the urinary tract in males and females, and the male reproductive system. A urologist is a physician who treats diseases and disorders of the genitourinary system. The urologist deals with urinary tract infections, cancer of the urinary system, and surgery of congenital problems. Urologists also diagnose and treat incontinence, and are experienced in endoscopy (surgery that involves a scope enabling the surgeon to view the surgery area inside the body).
