Patient / Medical Philosophy

I have devoted my career to caring for patients with head and neck tumors. My clinical interests include precancerous lesions, cancer of the mouth, throat, neck, and larynx, melanoma and other skin cancers, salivary tumors, thyroid cancer, and cancers of the sinuses and skull base. My goal is to provide patients with advanced surgical care for head and neck cancer with an emphasis on quality-of-life issues, such as retaining a patient's ability to speak and swallow and maintaining normal appearance. Many surgical procedures for head and neck cancer that have been developed at MSKCC help to preserve organ function and facial appearance to a far greater degree than was once possible. I also work closely with plastic surgeons, radiation therapists, chemotherapists, nurses, and speech therapists to create individualized treatment plans that keep the cure of cancer as the main goal.

My research has lead to an improved understanding of the genetic steps involved in cancer formation. My collaborators and I are studying the process by which tobacco use leads to cancer, in an effort to find ways to stop or reverse this process. We have also identified new targets for the prevention and treatment of cancer. I am currently leading a clinical trial at MSKCC that evaluates a COX-2 inhibitor for the treatment of precancerous leukoplakia in the mouth and throat. COX-2 is an enzyme that has been linked to inflammation and tumor formation and growth.

I have written many scientific papers on the causes of head and neck cancer and prevention of this disease. I have also published clinical papers and book chapters, and I speak nationally and internationally on head and neck cancer topics.

Malpractice History

HealthGrades did not find any closed malpractice claims for Dr. Jay O. Boyle, MD in the states of .

Medical malpractice is ordinary negligence by a healthcare provider which causes injury. Examples include being improperly diagnosed, treated, medicated or operated upon outside the standard of care. Standard of care is that level of care, skill and treatment which is recognized as acceptable and appropriate by a reasonably prudent similar healthcare provider under similar circumstances.

If your doctor has a closed malpractice claim in one of the states available to us, it will be listed here even if he/she no longer practices in that state. If your physician has malpractice claims from multiple states, evaluate the information for similarities. It is possible for multiple states to report the same claim because physicians are required to report all claims during the state licensing process.

Just because a physician has made a settlement (a claim settled out of court), it does not mean that he/she is a poor quality physician. Claim settlements may occur for a variety of reasons which should not necessarily reflect negatively on the physician's professional competence or conduct. A settlement payment on a medical malpractice action or claim is not a presumption that medical malpractice has occurred.

A malpractice judgment is a court order for a physician to pay a party a certain amount of money. This official decision by a court may or may not be based on a jury verdict; however, it is a conclusion that a civil wrong has occurred, typically based upon a preponderance of the evidence presented.

If your physician has a malpractice claim, evaluate the information and make a determination. You may want to use this information to start a discussion with the physician.

Note: HealthGrades obtains physician information from a variety of sources. Some information that is not designated as HealthGrades verified has been reported by the physician.
