In 1989 he was named Chief of the Spine Service in the Department of Orthopaedics at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. At Mount Sinai he was Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery. In 1992 he received the Physician of the Year Award at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Casden’s interests include the treatment of spinal deformity such as scoliosis, kyphosis and other childhood spinal disorders. He also specializes in the surgical treatment of herniated discs, spinal stenosis, tumors and adult spinal problems.
Dr. Casden is one of the few surgeons in the Northeast performing thoracoscopic and endoscopic spinal surgery for disorders of the thoracic and lumbar spine. This is an exciting area of spinal surgery that permits a surgeon to perform conventional spinal procedures with small incisions using video cameras and television monitors. Video assisted thoracoscopic techniques can be used for a variety of spinal surgeries including thoracic microdiskectomies, thoracic vertebrectomies, and anterior releases for fusion in scoliosis and kyphosis. Lumbar endoscopic spinal surgery can be used to do spinal fusions and instrumentation. Advantages for patients include less pain and blood loss combined with a shorter hospital stay. Dr. Casden also is skilled in the use of the BAK cage for anterior lumbar spinal fusions. Dr. Casden is involved in the teaching and development of this new and evolving field of spinal surgery.
