Nature of Complaint
On March 15, 2006 the dentist performed a dental examination including 2 bitewing x-rays of a patient born 06-13-2000. The dentist concluded that the patient’s teeth were clinically sound, that there were no signs of infection and that there was some chipped enamel adjacent to a pre-existing restoration of tooth “L”. On April 13, 2006 the patient was seen by another dentist for a second opinion. The second dentist examined the patient and reviewed the x-rays taken by the dentist. The second dentist noted that from his review of the x-rays the patient had radiographic evidence of abscesses associated with tooth “S” and tooth “L”. His clinical examination indicated soft tissue abscesses associate with one of these teeth, sufficiently severe that both teeth had to be extracted on April 18, 2006.
The dentist failed to diagnose the abscesses associated with tooth “S” and tooth “L” resulting in the delay of appropriate treatment for the infections associated with these abscesses.
The Wisconsin Dentistry Examining Board has issued a Final Decision and Order in which the dentist is Reprimanded. It is further ORDERED that the dentist’s license is Limited including and not limited to completion of related continuing education and provide proof of completion to the Board. The dentist shall Pay the costs of this proceeding in the amount of $1,212.73.
