Since 1999, HealthGrades has independently rated the quality of care at virtually
all of the nation's 5,000 hospitals. Based on hospitalization records that hospitals
directly submit to state governments and Medicare, HealthGrades utilizes the most
recent three years of data - approximately 40 million hospitalization records -
to determine its star ratings and awards. Star ratings are based on mortality and
complication rates that are risk adjusted, so that hospitals with different levels
of patient acuity can be compared on equal footing.
See our methodologies for detailed descriptions on
how these objective ratings and awards are derived.
These ratings and awards are relied upon by millions of consumers visiting HealthGrades.com,
and by hundreds of hospitals that use them to analyze their own quality and communicate
those achievements to their communities, the media, employers and other stakeholders.
To help consumers evaluate and compare physicians, HealthGrades provides quality
information regarding physicians. Although we do not provide star ratings for physicians,
we do analyze objective physician data to identify leading physicians in 23 specialties
and then recognize these physicians with one of two designations:
- HealthGrades Five-Star Doctors are affiliated with a hospital that
is highly rated by HealthGrades, are board certified in the specialty they practice,
have never had their license restricted or revoked, are free of state or federal
disciplinary actions and free of any malpractice claims for the last five years.
Read our methodology.
- HealthGrades Recognized Doctors are board certified in the specialty
they practice, have never had their license restricted or revoked, are free of state
or federal disciplinary actions and free of any malpractice claims for the last
five years. Read our methodology.
Additionally, we invite patients to share their experience about a physician through
a patient experience survey. These patient ratings include such measures as, ease
of scheduling appointments, office environment cleanliness/comfort, how well the
physician listens and answers questions, how well the physician helps patients understand
their medical condition, if the physician spends appropriate amount of time, if
the patient trusts the physician's decisions and recommendations, and if the patient
would recommend the physician to family/friends.
